I GUERRIERI DELLA LUCE
The works on display were made from 2003 to 2005, a period in which Cinzia Cotellessa exhibited at Villa Rufolo in Ravello and participates in a series of events including AMOR PER ROMA with Club Canova, where for the occasion she presents her “Colosseum”, a large oil painting, receives a prize for painting at the Teatro Belli, and again she presents her Castel dell’Ovo (large painting) at UNA FINESTRA SU NAPOLI, a Canova event.
She concludes this period with an exhibition entitled “Dreams, Signs and Pigment”, at the Stefano Simmi Gallery in Rome.In this exhibition, the artist compares man’s path towards spirituality and the search for God with art.The path that the artist always takes in front of a canvas is somehow the same path that is taken towards faith and towards God.This exhibition was inspired by Paulo Coelho’s book “IL MANUALE DEL GUERRIERO DELLA LUCE” which talks about man’s search for God through more or less heroic gestures and in this the artist has found an incredible similarity with the path the artists through light and shadows that eventually reaches the soul of their paintings and above all the heart of those who over time will be lucky enough to be able to admire these works.These paintings have a square support, a linear and regular surface somehow closed like a casket, a “MAGIC SQUARE” (3X3).
The MAGIC SQUARE, called SHU, appeared around the IV century BC in China and was dedicated to the planets or used as a useful support for mathematical problems (as well as tutelary angels) whose sum provided a sort of magical protection. From the XV century it was, as Cornelius Crippa quotes, “sacred tables of planets and endowed with great virtues, since they represent the divine reason, or form of celestial numbers”.
It is no coincidence that one of the artists portrayed is Durer whose famous engraving “Melancholia” contains the “magic square”.
Looking at the works more carefully we will discover that they are all of the same 33 × 33 size, as well as being 33 artists and 3 are the installation steps.
3 is the number of creation, and the sexual symbolism, which has natural roots, lies behind it. The male genital system is composed of three parts: two equal and one different. It follows that 3 has the meaning of orderly and harmonious development. This number is linked to people who feel a strong impulse to create original things and to express themselves, they are therefore artists…
Returning to the title of the exhibition “I GUERRIERI DELLA LUCE”, they are the magicians of art, the Hermes of the brush and perfect mathematicians.
If you could assign a number to an artist, it certainly could be the number 3.
The genesis of this project dedicated to the artists stems from the deep desire (a bit like what happened for the exhibition on angels) to give a face to those who, throughout their lives, have given color and faces to the whole humanity.
Without those faces, without the glare of their eyes, today we would not have the beauties that surround us: from cathedrals and chapels, to nudes and portraits of great men who ruled the temporal and spiritual world.
These Hermes of the brush deserve to be remembered and loved, as they have loved and believed in immortality. With modesty and great humility, Cinzia reproduced these faces, trying to catch a flicker, an expression she has never seen in reality, that she has imagined, thought and dreamed, but with which she hopes to have captured your gaze and your curiosity in the hope that they stayed inside you as they remained inside her.The works are not only composed of portraits in sanguine, there are other works called “table paintings”, an invention of Cinzia Cotellessa.
They are real sculptures painted on both sides: in the front the portrait of the artist and in the back a reproduction of one of his famous works (not a copy but rather in the manner of …). The structure is composed of a frame inside which there is a hidden pin, so the work can turn on itself and at the right angle you can see the two images at the same time.
The movable portraits – sculptures were made in oil or with a mixed technique on a wooden support, a material that our artist prefers, for the absorbing process of the the color: the color, filtering inside this living material, is stratified, like the concentric rings of a tree trunk.

And … if after the exhibition “I GUERRIERI DELLA LUCE” we will remember the face of Dalì or Munch and even connect a work to a face, then this will be the real success of this exhibition and of the “Warriors of Light” who told a story also through the words of the poet Paulo Coelho.
